Don't respond immediately
The first thing to do is not reply in the next ten minutes. Whatever emotion arrived with the notification — hope, anxiety, anger, relief — is not the state to make a decision from.
Give yourself at least a few hours. The message will still be there. What you do with it matters; when you do it matters too.
What the message actually means — honestly
Something made them reach out. That could be: genuine wanting to reconnect, loneliness, boredom, habit, guilt, wanting to keep you loosely available without fully returning, or something practical.
The content of the message tells you more than the fact of it. A “hey” at 1am means something different than a specific, thoughtful message that names what they're thinking. Read what they actually wrote, not the version your hope wants it to be.
What your options actually are
Reply thoughtfully after you've settled down — only if you genuinely want to open a conversation and are clear about what you'd want from it.
Don't reply — you're allowed to continue no contact even if they've initiated. Their breaking the silence doesn't obligate you to respond.
Reply briefly and honestly — “I need a bit more time, can we talk later” is a real option if you're not sure what you want yet.
Wait before you reply. Really.

Does this mean they want to get back together?
Maybe, and maybe not. A lot of reach-outs during no contact are testing the water, not a clear statement of intent. Don't assume the best or worst — wait for clarity.
Does responding break my streak?
Yes, technically — but a streak is a tool, not the point. The point is your recovery and making clear-headed decisions. If responding from a genuinely settled place is the right move, your streak restarting is a fine price for that.
